With Google's new Gemini AI models, "we can do things that have never been possible on smartphones," he added. The "System UI" levelThis is possible because Google has baked Gemini AI models and assistant technology into the "System UI" level on Android devices. However, he stressed that this doesn't mean the company can't build unique experiences on Android devices, including many new AI experiences. This works through a combination of Google Search, Gemini AI technology, and Android — something that's not possible on any other platform, Samat said.

In my late 40s, I sold GMM in a landmark buyout and stepped away last year after turning 50. I decided to upload the sprawling, disorganized document into ChatGPT and ask it to find blind spots in my youthful worldview. The experiment allowed me to reflect on the hunger and ambition I had and the challenges I faced in my 20s. Today I'm confident in my judgment, but I am mindful to not be judgmental. Close relationships with family and friends, says Ravin Gandhi, are "by far the most important thing we all have."

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said Google will "sort it out" if it determines Microsoft -backed OpenAI relied on YouTube content to train an artificial intelligence model that can generate videos. The New York Times later reported that OpenAI had transcribed over a million hours of YouTube videos. Asked if Google would sue OpenAI if the startup violated the search company's terms of service, Pichai didn't offer specifics. Pichai said Google has processes in place to figure out if OpenAI failed to comply with the rules. WATCH: Alphabet CEO on report OpenAI trained GPT-4 on YouTube: We have clear terms of service

CNN —Whenever you type a search into Apple’s Safari browser — say, on an iPhone — chances are it’s Google that returns the results. You can tell Safari to pick another search engine, but in practice most people tend to stick with Google by default. You might know that Google pays Apple enormous sums of money every year for that prime placement. Those eye-popping figures, newly unsealed this week, come from a blockbuster antitrust lawsuit against Google that’s just entered its closing stages. Nothing prevented Apple from choosing a different default search partner, Google contends.

Alphabet paid Apple $20 billion in 2022 to remain Safari's default search engine, court documents show. That's a $2 billion increase compared to the reported amount Google paid Apple in 2021. AdvertisementThe price to be the default search engine on iPhones, iPads, and Macs has apparently gone up. That's at least $2 billion more than the reported price it paid Apple in 2021. Google reportedly paid Apple around $18 billion in 2021, surpassing a billion dollars every month, according to court documents.

Devastating floods that have killed hundreds of people and displaced tens of thousands more in East Africa are now inundating parts of the Masai Mara, one of Africa’s greatest wildlife national reserves. On Wednesday, the Telek River broke its banks and overflowed into parts of the natural reserve, flooding many tourist camps. A spokesman for the Kenyan Red Cross, Munir Ahmed, said that more than 90 people have been evacuated, some by helicopter. “The situation in Masai Mara is so bad,” said Daniel Ikayo, the owner of a safari company that operates there. “There is water everywhere.”The floods in the reserve have added to the heavy damage to key economic resources in Kenya, including livestock, crops and infrastructure.

Trillions of noisy, red-eyed insects called cicadas are emerging from the earth after more than a decade of feeding on tree roots. This spring, Brood XIX, known as the Great Southern Brood, and Brood XIII, or the Northern Illinois Brood, are emerging simultaneously. The Great Southern Brood, which emerges across the South and the Midwest every 13 years, has been seen at sites scattered from North Carolina to Georgia. The Northern Illinois Brood, which appears every 17 years in the Midwest, is expected to appear in the next month, as temperatures there warm. “There’s surprisingly little information about cicadas that you’d like to know,” said Raymond Goldstein, a physicist at the University of Cambridge.

The insects will infiltrate a much bigger geographical area than similar occurrences in most years because they’re part of the dual emergence of two particular periodical cicada broods. Although the full-scale emergence isn’t underway yet, experts have some guidance on how to prepare for cicada season. A periodical cicada that has just shed its outer skeleton crawls among holes dug by emerging cicada nymphs on May 20, 2021, in Takoma Park, Maryland. A young tree in Takoma Park, Maryland, is draped in netting in May 2021 to protect its small branches from being damaged by periodical cicadas laying their eggs in them. It’s not clear why periodical cicadas evolved to emerge every 13 or 17 years.

The 13-year group, known as Brood XIX, or the Great Southern Brood, is the largest periodical cicada brood, stretching across the southeastern United States. The Northern Illinois Brood, or Brood XIII, emerges every 17 years. Periodical cicadas are smaller and mostly black, with bright red eyes and orange-tinged wings and legs. Billions of cicadas are expected this spring as two different broods — Broods XIX and XIII — emerge simultaneously. However, predictions of a cicadapocalypse — in which Brood XIII and Brood XIX show up at the same place at the same time — are probably an exaggeration.

The European Union on Monday opened an investigation into Apple , Alphabet and Meta , in its first probe under the sweeping new Digital Markets Act tech legislation. "The way that Apple and Alphabet's implemented the DMA rules on anti-steering seems to be at odds with the letter of the law. Apple and Alphabet will still charge various recurring fees, and still limit steering," EU competition chief Margrethe Vestager said during a press conference on Monday. "We're confident our plan complies with the DMA, and we'll continue to constructively engage with the European Commission as they conduct their investigations.

Big-ticket travel experiences like those are indicative of the "quiet luxury" trend which began in the world of fashion, with timeless lines trumping brand-blaring outfits. Less limelight, more connectionJaclyn Sienna India, the founder of the ultra-luxury travel company Sienna Charles, said she considers herself a longtime quiet luxury disciple. Monaco has long been a playground for the elite, but wealthy travelers are increasingly opting for more remote locations, say luxury travel advisors. But another important aspect of the quiet luxury movement concerns security. For them, quiet luxury travel is about exclusivity and privacy, she said.

It comes as Apple is expected to unveil several new AI features at its developer conference in June. According to a Bloomberg report, Apple is interested in licensing and building Google’s Gemini AI engine, which includes chatbots and other AI tools, into upcoming iPhones and its iOS 18 features. A partnership with Google would catapult Apple into the growing AI arms race. Apple, Google and OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment. Behind the scenes, Apple reportedly has been working its on-device generative AI capabilities and acquiring companies, such as Canadian startup DarwinAI.

My big takeaway is that it's really worth paying to be inside a private reserve. Still, it was a wonderful experience, and if I had more money, I may feel differently. But again, as far as the safari experience goes, the private reserve is hard to beat. And if luxurious lodges are out of the question, private reserves can also be visited more affordably. Some lodges inside private reserves, like Shindzela or Rhino River Lodge, can cost around $250 per person per night.

We’re hoping that we even get kids watching their dogs in their backyard and seeing if their dogs behave interestingly during the eclipse,” Hartstone-Rose said. The space agency is expecting far larger numbers for the 2024 total solar eclipse — nearly 2,500 people have already signed up, she added. “(During a total solar eclipse) you have so many different ways the light is scattering, so there’s these beautiful colors of orange and purple and green. “It’s kind of a great human sensory experience to be in the middle of a total solar eclipse.”
